Ohoopee Match Club
Cobbtown, Georgia · Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner
A Gil Hanse design in rural south Georgia built only for match play: 22 holes on a sandy former hunting plantation, two routings and no par on the scorecard.
Founder Mike Walrath built Ohoopee Match Club on a former hunting plantation near the Ohoopee River in Cobbtown, Georgia, and gave Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner an unusual brief: a course for match play only. It opened in 2018, and the scorecard does not list par. The setting is flat, sandy pine country, so the interest comes from the shaping of greens and hazards rather than big elevation changes.
Hanse built 22 holes that make up two 18-hole routings, the main course and the 'Whiskey Routing,' which adds five extra holes. Without stroke play to protect, the holes lean on half-par lengths, drivable par 4s, very long par 3s and greens with distinct sections. Deep Kershaw sand and dormant Bermuda in winter keep the ground firm, so bump-and-run shots are often the best option.
