Spyglass Hill Golf Course
Pebble Beach, California · Robert Trent Jones Sr.
Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s Pebble Beach course: five holes in the sand dunes by the ocean, then a long, demanding inland stretch through Del Monte Forest pines.
Spyglass Hill opened in March 1966, a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design in Pebble Beach's Del Monte Forest. Its holes are named for characters and places in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, from Treasure Island at the 1st to Black Spot, Captain Flint and Long John Silver later on. Since 1967 it has been part of the rotation for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
The round starts with its most famous stretch. The 1st, Treasure Island, is a long par 5 that bends 90 degrees left and runs downhill toward the ocean, and the next four holes play through sand dunes and ice plant. The 4th, Blind Pew, is a short par 4 to a long, thin green set in the dunes; Jones called it his favorite par 4.
From the 6th the course turns inland and climbs into tall pines, with heavily bunkered, elevated greens and several holes that use ponds. It is a stern test of driving and long irons, and from the back tees it carries a slope rating of 145. The course record of 62 is shared by Phil Mickelson, set in 2005, and Luke Donald, in 2006. The U.S. Senior Women's Open is scheduled to be played here in 2030.
