Victoria National Golf Club
Newburgh, Indiana · Tom Fazio
Tom Fazio's 1998 course on a reclaimed strip mine east of Evansville, with holes threaded between spoil ridges and fingers of water, and a longtime Korn Ferry Tour host.
Evansville businessman Terry Friedman hired Tom Fazio in 1996 to build a championship course on Peabody Coal's abandoned Victoria strip mine near Newburgh, Indiana. Coal was mined there from the 1950s until 1977. Fazio routed holes through the corridors between old spoil mounds and around some 40 acres of narrow lakes that formed where the shovels hit the water table. It opened in 1998, and the Dormie Network bought it in 2018.
The result is a demanding course with steep slopes, cliffs and water close to many greens. Reviewers rank the finish from the 14th through the 18th among the hardest closing stretches anywhere, highlighted by the 16th, a par 3 to an elevated green above water. Victoria National hosted the 2006 U.S. Senior Amateur and the Korn Ferry Tour's season finale for several years.
