Hideki Matsuyama was born in Matsuyama, in Ehime Prefecture, and started golf at four under his father. He changed schools as a teenager to find better training, then won back-to-back Asian Amateur titles while at Tohoku Fukushi University. That earned him a 2011 Masters start, where he was the only amateur to make the cut and took home the Silver Cup.
He turned pro in 2013 and topped the Japan Golf Tour money list as a rookie before moving to the PGA Tour, where he won the 2014 Memorial. Titles at the Phoenix Open and WGC-HSBC Champions pushed him to second in the world in 2017, and in 2021 he became the first Japanese man to win a major, at Augusta.
Known for his deliberate pre-shot routine and elite iron play, Matsuyama is the most successful Japanese player in PGA Tour history. He won the 2024 Genesis Invitational with a closing 62, took Olympic bronze and the FedEx St. Jude that summer, and opened 2025 with a record-setting win at The Sentry.
