Justin Rose was born in Johannesburg to English parents and moved to Hampshire at age five, where he learned the game at a series of clubs near Hook. He broke 70 at 11, played the Walker Cup at 17 and then finished tied for fourth as an amateur at the 1998 Open at Royal Birkdale, holing a pitch from the rough on the last hole.

He turned pro the next day and missed his first 21 cuts before his career found its footing in 2002 with four wins, including the British Masters. He led the European Order of Merit in 2007, won the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion, took Olympic gold in Rio in 2016 and reached world No. 1 in 2018.

Rose has stayed competitive deep into his forties. He lost a Masters playoff to Rory McIlroy in 2025, won the FedEx St. Jude Championship that August, and set the Farmers Insurance Open scoring record in a wire-to-wire win in early 2026. He is a long-time anchor of Europe's Ryder Cup team.
