Maverick McNealy grew up in the Bay Area as one of four sons of Sun Microsystems co-founder Scott McNealy. He also played hockey and won two state titles with a junior team before focusing on golf. At Stanford he matched the school's 18-hole record and won the 2015 Haskins Award as the nation's best college player, reaching No. 1 in the world amateur ranking.
Despite that pedigree, he seriously considered a business career before turning professional in 2017. He worked through the Web.com Tour, reached the PGA Tour in 2019 and won the 2024 RSM Classic with a birdie on the final hole in his 134th start. He climbed to 10th in the world in 2025, made the cut in all four majors that year, and flies himself to some events as a licensed pilot.
