Michael Thorbjornsen was born in Cleveland to a Norwegian father and a Zimbabwean mother who played college golf, and grew up in the Boston suburbs, attending Wellesley High School. He won the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur at Baltusrol, then became the first champion of that event to make the cut at the U.S. Open, doing so at Pebble Beach in 2019.
At Stanford he won the Western Amateur and finished fourth at the 2022 Travelers Championship as an amateur. Topping the PGA Tour University rankings earned him a card in 2024, and he had two runner-up finishes before winning the final Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club in 2026, closing with 63 to beat Xander Schauffele by two.
