Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy grew up in Holywood, County Down, the only child of parents who worked extra jobs to pay for his golf. He was hitting long drives at the local club as a toddler, became its youngest member at seven, and worked with coach Michael Bannon from boyhood. He was the top-ranked amateur in the world in 2007 and turned professional later that year.

His breakthrough came at the 2011 U.S. Open, and by 25 he had added two PGA Championships and the 2014 Open. A long winless stretch in the majors followed, though he kept piling up titles, including two Players Championships and three FedEx Cups. He finally completed the career grand slam at the 2025 Masters, then defended the green jacket in 2026, one shot clear of Scottie Scheffler.

At 5-foot-9, McIlroy remains one of the longest drivers in the game. A fitness program built around leg and core strength, adopted to protect a troubled back, helped him produce ball speeds above 190 mph. He is a mainstay of Europe's Ryder Cup side and splits his schedule between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.
