Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon Dunes)
Bandon, Oregon · David McLay Kidd
David McLay Kidd's 1999 links on the southern Oregon coast, the walking-only course that launched the Bandon Dunes resort and American destination links golf.
Mike Keiser built Bandon Dunes on remote coastal land in southern Oregon and hired a then-unknown Scottish architect, David McLay Kidd, for the first course. It opened in May 1999, and its success led to Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails, Old Macdonald and Sheep Ranch, turning the resort into the model for walking-only, links-style destination golf in the United States. Like every course at the resort, it is walk-only, with caddies available.
The course is laid out on sandy ground above the Pacific, with gorse, fescue and pot bunkers rather than trees. Wind decides how most holes play, and Kidd left room to run the ball onto greens. Several holes reach the bluff edge, starting with the 4th, whose green sits right above the ocean. The USGA has used it as the main venue for the 2007 U.S. Mid-Amateur, 2020 U.S. Amateur, 2022 U.S. Junior Amateur and 2025 U.S. Women's Amateur.
