Garden City Golf Club
Garden City, New York · Devereux Emmet
A men-only Long Island club laid out by Devereux Emmet and reworked by Walter Travis, host of the 1902 U.S. Open, four U.S. Amateurs and the 1924 Walker Cup.
The course opened in 1897 as the Island Golf Links on the Hempstead Plain, with Devereux Emmet as designer, and was incorporated as Garden City Golf Club in 1899. Walter Travis, an early member, won the 1900 U.S. Amateur here and later redesigned the course, adding bunkers and reshaping greens. It is one of the few remaining men-only clubs in the United States.
The land is flat and open, so wind, bunkering and tilted greens supply the challenge; the 10th and 15th are prime examples of greens built into the natural slope. The course finishes, unusually, with a par 3 over water to a green in front of the clubhouse. Garden City hosted the 1902 U.S. Open, four U.S. Amateurs and the 1924 Walker Cup.
