No. 51 · America's 100 Greatest
Sebonack Golf Club
Southampton, New York · Jack Nicklaus, Tom Doak
A 2006 Jack Nicklaus–Tom Doak collaboration on Great Peconic Bay, next to National Golf Links and Shinnecock Hills, and host of the 2013 U.S. Women's Open.
Developer Michael Pascucci bought the Sebonac Neck property between National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills and paired two architects with very different instincts, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak. The course opened in May 2006 on about 300 acres, with views over Great Peconic Bay and Cold Spring Pond. Membership was reported at $500,000 for golf alone when it opened.
Most visitors find it closer to Doak's style, with wide, rolling fairways, sandy waste areas and big, rough-edged bunkers, though many greens favor high approach shots in the Nicklaus manner. Par 5s are back-loaded: the first one arrives at the 9th, and three of the final six holes are par 5s. In 2013 it hosted the U.S. Women's Open, the first played on Long Island, and Inbee Park won.
